How school and i mesh

an educational memoir

School in general has been good to me for as long as I can remember, but the last two years have taught me more than I could have ever imagined. Growing up and going through elementary, Jr high, and even most of High School  I was an average kid. Coming and going with the latest fads like Pokemon in elementary, and myspace in middle school. I was playing popular sports and wearing the same clothes as 95 percent of all other teens. up until my senior year.

I’m not sure on what exactly opened my eyes to the ideas that now roam my head, but I know that two teachers from my last year of high school set me in the right direction. They taught my English and Art classes, and I knew that every time I walked into their classrooms to pay attention cause I was going to learn something valuable.  I started waking up with the mind set of how can I better my works? Instead of ehh maybe ill sleep in today.

My English teacher did not appear to be a friendly guy with his square jaw and crippling straight face stare downs. He coached to football team, and worked out quite frequently.  What I found confusing and also admired about him is the articulation in his sentences, the appreciation for theater, and he was always reading a new book. I had always thought books were for nerds, and now I learn more from books I read than I could have ever dreamt. I look at books now as a dream themselves, they can escalade me to an alternate world while still sitting in bed. I learned from Mr. Wojciechowski is that studying a subject thoroughly no matter what the subject is always pays off.

The man that taught my art class was able to bring out the two qualities that now dominate my college studies, and run my life. I took a painting class from Mr. Batt and struggled but enjoyed it. While in the art department I tried out pottery and connected with it immediately. I started staying after school regularly to better new found skill and soon after began to enter my pieces into art galleries and competitions. It was in the spring of 2010 when Mr. Batt invited my to a “seed exchange” that he hosted. He told me it was a bunch of long haired granola people trading seed from last year harvest. I said “sure it sounds like a cool experience”. And ever since I have been addicted to planting whatever seeds I can get my hands on.

If asked in my first year of high school what occupation I wanted I would tell you. I want to be a Dentist, because they make good money. When people today inquire as to what career I want I say. I am chasing after an Agricultural degree because I love getting my hands deep in a dark rich soil and watching new life creep out of the earth. My last year of high school and first year of college have helped me to push boundaries, be creative, choose me own path, and be somebody new because the world has enough average people….
